When to Test Your Microphone

Before a Call

Verify your mic works and check audio levels before joining a Zoom, Teams, or Discord call.

New Device Setup

Just plugged in a headset or USB microphone? Confirm it's detected and picking up sound.

Recording Prep

Check audio levels and clarity before recording a podcast, voiceover, tutorial, or screen recording.

How It Works

01

Click "Test My Microphone"

Your browser will ask for microphone permission. Allow it to start the real-time volume meter.

02

Speak and watch the meter

The volume bar reacts in real time. You'll see your current level and peak level to judge loudness.

03

Switch microphones

If you have multiple mics (built-in, USB, headset), pick the one you want to test from the dropdown.

04

Record and playback

Hit Record to capture a short test clip, then play it back to hear how your microphone actually sounds.

Common Microphone Issues & How to Fix Them

No sound detected: Make sure your mic isn't muted — check the physical mute button on your headset and the system volume mixer. On macOS, go to System Settings > Sound > Input and verify the right device is selected.

Permission denied: Click the microphone icon in your browser's address bar and change the setting to "Allow." On macOS, also check System Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone.

Very quiet input: Increase the input volume in your system's sound settings. If you're using a condenser mic, make sure phantom power is enabled on your audio interface.

Echoing or feedback: Use headphones while testing to prevent your speakers from feeding back into the microphone. Lower the speaker volume or move farther from the speakers.

Crackling or popping: Try a different USB port. USB hubs can cause audio issues — plug your mic directly into your computer. Update your audio drivers if the problem persists.

Microphone Types for Screen Recording

Built-in microphone: Every laptop has one. Fine for casual calls, but picks up keyboard noise and fan sound. Not ideal for tutorials or voiceovers.

USB condenser mic: Plug-and-play, great sound quality. Popular choices like the Blue Yeti or Rode NT-USB are perfect for screen recordings, podcasts, and voiceovers.

Headset microphone: Convenient for meetings and gaming. Audio quality varies widely — fine for calls, but dedicated mics sound better for recording.

For screen recordings with system audio capture, microphone input, smart auto-zoom, and 4K export, Screen Charm records both your screen and audio sources in a single click.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this microphone test really free?

Yes, completely free with no limits. The tool runs in your browser using the Web Audio API — no server processing, no account, no data collection.

Is my audio private?

100%. Nothing is uploaded to any server. Your audio stream is processed locally in your browser and discarded when you close the tab. Recordings are stored only on your device.

Which browsers support microphone testing?

Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Safari all support the getUserMedia and Web Audio APIs. For the best experience with recording playback, use Chrome or Edge.

Can I test an external USB microphone?

Yes. If your system recognizes the microphone, it will appear in the dropdown. You can switch between your built-in mic and any external audio input devices.

Why does the meter stay at 0% when I speak?

Your microphone might be muted or the wrong device is selected. Check your system sound settings, ensure the correct input device is chosen, and verify the input volume is turned up.

What volume level should I aim for?

For calls and recordings, aim for the "Normal" range (10–30% on the meter) during regular speech. Occasional peaks into the yellow zone are fine. If you're constantly in the red, move farther from the mic or reduce input gain.
